If you're having trouble with crashing CoP it is most likely because the engine is trying to put more stuff in the memory than it can keep track of and is crashing itself. The best way to fix this is to set the texture detail slider to 80 or 60% and download the optimisation patch (available in a previous announcement).

There has also been unconfirmed reports of ATI Tray Tools and Fraps causing crashes but nothing has been thoroughly tested so try closing those programs (if any) if you are still having trouble.

Also, if you are able to run the above setting with the optimisation patch you might want to try using the basic prefetch over the no prefetch that is used in the patch (it will decrease those annoying micro-stutters). On top of all that, there have been reports of the engine deciding to dump a massive stack of information into the save file so a game that was okay when the save file was made may crash when loading that said file for no apparent reason. The easiest way to counteract this is to go OCD in regards to saving; don't JUST use Quicksave: use smart save as well - pressing 'S' on the Esc menu whilst in game will save the current game with the in-game location, date and time.
