How to open launch options menu
How to Add Launch Options in Steam

Open Steam

Go to Library
Right-click Counter-Strike 2 → Properties

Under the General tab, find Launch Options
Enter commands in one line, separated by spaces

Example:

-high -threads 8 -novid -nojoy +fps_max 0 +cl_forcepreload 1

The settings save automatically, just close the window.


Technical breakdown of each command
-HIGH
The first launch option is -high, this is probably one of the most imporant commands in the launch options menu as it:
  • Forces CS2 to run at higher CPU scheduling priority
  • Windows gives CS2 more time slices, reducing interruptions
  • Great for CPUs that run background tasks (Chrome, Discord, etc.)

Benefits: Lower input latency, fewer micro-stutters

NOTE: If you stream / record: may starve OBS or encoder threads
-THREADS
Second launch option is -threads(Replace the 'X' with the amount of threads your CPU has) this:
  • Controls how many CPU worker threads the particle/render pipeline uses
  • Helps avoid thread-idling or thread-congestion on multi-core CPUs
  • Makes frame-time consistency better (less spiking)
Benefits: Higher minimum FPS, less hitching
NOTE: Setting above core count → worse performance

This image shows how to check for the amount of threads within task manager:
-NOVID
Third is -novid this has no impact on FPS however it removes the CS2 intro which will save you some time.
  • Removes startup Valve intro video
  • Avoids early resource allocation delay
Benefits: Zero FPS — just saves time removing the intro video

-NOJOY
-Nojoy disables joystick/gamepad APIs and prevents Steam Input from loading extra drivers and DLLs
  • Benefits: Small memory savings, fewer background calls
  • Safe for mouse+keyboard users
+FPS_MAX 0
+fps_max 0 unlocks FPS cap and lets GPU run at full potential

NOTE: Only works correctly with VSync OFF inside game settings
NOTE: Use +fps_max 300 if your PC overheats or if you prefer stability

+CL_FORCEPRELOAD 1
Forces models, textures, and shaders to load before match, rather than loading assets in the middle of a firefight.
  • Benefits: Fewer hitches during first combat
  • Slightly increases load times
  • Best for PCs with SSD (NOT HDD)

EXTRAS
Options to AVOID in CS2
  • -tickrate 128 - the tick is server controlled now
  • -nod3d9ex - CS2 uses new render pipeline
  • -d3d9ex - Same reason as above
  • -lv - Low violence mode is now broken / removed
  • -processheap - Can cause instability
  • +mat_queue_mode - threadded rendering is controlled internally now

-refresh x
Replace x with your refresh rate, useful if Windows incorrectly forces 60 Hz.
NOTE: Replace the 'x' with your current refresh rate, e.g if you have a 144hz montior = -refresh 144

If you have very low-end GPU

+gpu_mem_level 0 +mat_picmip 2 -- this smooths out the VRAM spikes but reduces texture detail.




BEST CONFIGS

Balanced Performance + Stability
-high -threads X -novid -nojoy +fps_max 0 +cl_forcepreload 1


high-end
-high -threads X -novid -nojoy +fps_max 0 +cl_forcepreload 1 -refresh 240


Low-end systems
-threads X -nojoy -novid +fps_max 150 +cl_forcepreload 1 +gpu_mem_level 0 +mat_picmip 2
Finishing note
Please remember that the launch options won’t turn a low-end PC into a high-end one, but when configured correctly, they make your system run Counter-Strike 2 as efficiently as possible from the very first frame. However hopefully you’ll get smoother gameplay, stronger 1% lows, and more consistent performance in every match.
