Turn On EAX

This method works with absolutely any old game and even many modern ones. Many modern games covertly support the OpenAL API due to game console policy issues. The game doesn't support it, but its engine does.

The game is very dark and the developers initially intended that you would search for the monsters by ear, which as a mechanic does not work in BFG Edition because there is no EAX at Options. In general, it is there, but it is secretive. This tutorial can also be applied to BFG Edition, But there you will have to enable it manually through the settings file. Maybe someone else can tell you how to do this.

Download and Install OpenAL: Cross Platform 3D Audio
https://www.openal.org/downloads/

Download and Install Creative ALchemy Universal
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/28-creative-alchemy-universal/

Remember the folder where you installed it. The program will not place a shortcut on your desktop, you will need to do this yourself.

Reboot PC.

Run as Administrator ALchemy.exe

Press Add. Enter Game Titile like "Doom 3". Choose "Use Game Path". Press "..." and choose folder with .exe-file of the game. Press OK.

Move the game Title from the left column to the right using ">>".

Keep the program open - this is important. Each time you start the game, the ALchemy must be open or minimized.

Run Doom 3. Listen to the sound of pressing buttons in the menu. Turn on eax in sound settings. Reboot game.

You should hear a reverb effect when pressing the menu buttons. If the sound has changed, then everything is working and you can play.

Alternative version how to turn on EAX in other games if you have problems.I haven't tried this myself. The method above always worked for me. But I'll share it just in case it helps you. The link there is complaining about viruses.

If you want to understand what happened, you can read this article, but it is in Russian.

PS To get the maximum effect from the game, it is advisable to play it on a CRT monitor.

I tried several games with EAX, such as F.E.A.R., DOOM 3, QUAKE 4, and GTA 3.

What I ended up doing was downloading another version of ALchemy and following a guide I found on Condemned: Criminal Origins (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2487107657) . It detected EAX and I was able to play. There are also bugs in F.E.A.R. if you play with dubbing (Spanish, French, Italian), which I fixed by downloading a patch for the game.

I don't know what to say. It worked fine for me in Quake 4 and Prey 2006 and installed the same way as for Doom 3.

Are you only having problems with Quake 4, or do you have the same problem with other EAX games?

Hi, I wanted to use this in Quake 4 and other games, but it simply doesn't detect ALchemy. I've tried opening it as task manager or anything; it just won't let me use EAX.

oled would work well too considering the cost of crts, and the fact that they are all (at the newest) at least 20 years old for monitors anyway (halfway decent monitors anyway). I agree crt's are better than oled but the average joe ain't gonna be able to fix all the problems that will come with owning a 20+ year old piece of tech especially around the time when capacitors were crap and didn't last ten years without blowing up (2001 to 2006 or 2007?) cold solder joints on the neck board or really any part of the crt will be more than most can wrap their minds around, and the fact that nobody really fixes them anymore but I suppose people are learning how to but they are few and far between, and they cost a small fortune (100-200 maybe) unless you can do it yourself....

Buying a fully recapped and all that other fun stuff crt will probably run you 500+ considering some junk crts sell for 250 or more.
