Dedicated server accounts
Hi all, I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer as I have not been able to find the information clearly stated online.

I'm picking up a server that I plan to experiment with and set up virtualized dedicated server for some steam games. I am planning on setting up two instances, one for Valheim and one for & days to die.

My question is do I need two seperate accounts, aside from my normal gaming account, to set up the servers, or can I set it up to run under one separate account?

In theory, no problem, you can run all your dedicated servers under the same Steam account (of course I am assuming you mean a Steam account?). I've run several VPS's at the same time, each hosting multiple game-server instances at the same time each - all using the same Steam account - to use for SteamCMD purposes, and (in the case of some Valve games) the sv_setsteamaccount function.

Of course, this is based on a few assumptions:
  • The "account" you are talking about is a Steam account? If not, then not sure what account you are talking about.
  • The games you are going to host dedicated servers for do not require that the Steam account for running the servers "own" the game. Most games will let you setup and run their "dedicated server" version without Steam account "owning" in Steam. There are exceptions of course. These vary greatly by game.
  • You do not try to host the dedicated server for a game, using the same Steam account you use on a client to play the game. In some games, this will cause an issue where it thinks you are trying to share the same Steam account with friends so many of you can play the game simultaneously - with only one of you "owning" it in your Steam account.
  • I don't own/play the particular games you mention, so they might have some unique limitations.

Yes I am talking about a Steam account. And indeed not the one that I play my games from. I found some information that said I do need a separate account to run the servers but could not find info on whether or not I could run the dedicated servers i.e. multiple servers at the same time from one account.

From the information you posted it looks like I just need one extra account to run them. Thank you very much for the info and your time.

Both Dedicated Servers seem to be able to be downloadad with username "anonymous"...so there is no additional steam account required in my opinon:

Yes, that basically needs they don't need to be downloaded with a Steam account that "owns" the game. Just like Team Fortress 2, etc.
