Forcibly hijacked a foreign nations ship, that is an act of war.

"that is an act of war" says you, some random guy on the internet.
And this just after the exfiltration of Machado (Political opponent of Maduro). That's what the americans waited for to start the hostilities. Now they have their person to seize the power after Maduro's death. So they can go all in without fear of her being killed.
Thou shall steal millions dollars in oil if it is from brown people - Trump 17:76

Ah you must not be aware that the Venezuelan oil industry is entirely state owned. This includes the tankers. So blowing up non state owned boats is one thing, but the US just seized a state owned vessel from a foreign nation.

That makes it a direct act against the Venezuelan government.
nothing ever happens (especially under trump)
Maduro is a bad guy. Venezuela is a failed socialist country and bad actor in our hemisphere.

Don't mourn for regime change in Venezuela. The election of Chavez 27 years ago was the beginning of the end for them. The people voted for their doom.

Maduro better watch out or Trump is going to facilitate the transfer of power to the primary winner and winner of this year's Nobel peace prize.

Venezuela could be a strong ally in the region.

I don't think anyone mourns for Maduro (or will) or for regime change in Venezuela, rather more the after effects of it, because he's spent his entire presidency hollowing out the state so that nothing is left other than him and his cronies. He made himself a loadbearing dictator, and the results of his removal could be catastrophic if handled poorly. I personally fret over that just a little ):

They shouldn't be smuggling anything in the first place... serves them right.
Trump can't declare war, no matter what he and the other incompetent twits in his administration think. That is solely reserved for Congress under the Constitution.

What Trump did was commit an act of piracy on the high seas. And under U.S. Code (18 U.S.C. § 1651) an act of piracy under the law of nations is punishable by life in prison. In fact, under international law, an act of piracy on the high seas can by prosecuted as a crime by any country.

Not that anything will be done, since the orange Buffoon-in-Chief's pet 6-3 SCOTUS majority made him effectively immune for anything he does while president. But any member of the military who carried out an unlawful order to seize that oil tanker during peace time is subject the UCMJ for violating international and US laws.

They aren't pirates, therefore it wasn't piracy.

Seizing a ship at sea when not at war with the owning country is an act of piracy under international and US law. Full stop.
