It would be nice if I could also private non-steam games
I was very excited when I discovered the new private games feature, because I've for a long time wanted some some way to prevent my non-steam games from showing up on my profile as me playing them. I was very disappointed when I saw that you couldn't private non-steam games.

I use a steam deck to play my games and in order to use apps in gaming mode (like discord, firefox, spotify, etc.) you have to add them as non-steam games. It looks kinda strange when my friends look in their friends list and it says I'm playing firefox or discord and I'd rather it didn't lol.

The other problem is if I launch one of these apps while I have a game running, the app takes priority over the game on my profile or the friends list. So let's say for example I'm playing Sea of Thieves and a friend want to join my game. I open discord to start a call and now it says I'm playing discord instead of Sea of Thieves. Or if I want to google something while I'm playing, so I open firefox and now it notifies all my friends I'm playing firefox.

I know it's not that big of a deal, but it's still something that bothers me. Is there anybody else that has this niche issue?

Why would you comment on a post you clearly didn't take the time to read

This is normal behavior. If you open two games, it is the last game that will be displayed in your current status. Be it a non-steam game or not.

but for your post, I don't really mind if they implement a private feature for non-steam games when you run it.

Yeah, I know, I was just trying to give some examples as to why it would be nice to have the option to make non-steam games private. At least for steam deck users like me.

Let's face it, that is a bit too much to comprehend for some.

Since when does a non-Steam game must be launched with Steam?

Since launching a non-steam game with steam is the only way to apply steam controller bindings.

What if you need the controller driver?

Maybe I didn't explain myself well enough since multiple people are saying stuff like this.

On a normal pc setup you where you have a desktop, you don't have to launch something like firefox through steam, because you can just launch the application directly outside of the steam client.

But in the steam decks gaming mode, the one that's designed to play games on the go, you don't have a desktop with access to all the applications you've installed previously in the desktop mode. The only way to launch them in gaming mode is to add them as a non-steam game in desktop mode. And that's where my gripe comes in, because then it says I'm playing "Firefox" or "discord" or whatever in my friend's friends list.

And before someone suggest that I just switch to desktop mode in order to play games and have other apps running simultaneously, you can't tab out of the games without an external keyboard plugged in. Which kinda defeats the point of me using a handheld gaming device.

Ding ding we have a winner. And thank you for the points op, I'm certain it was difficult for you to make the purchases needed for them.

Again, it's the only way to get controller bindings to work with some non-steam games. I'd LOVE this feature if it was added, great idea!
I know it's been a while since the last comment on this post, but I'm now encountering the same problem. I still can't mark a non-Steam game as private, but from what I can see, it's nowhere else except on my computer. Neither can my friends see it, nor can I see it in the Steam app on my phone using the same account. I don't know if it depends on the non-Steam game you have, but in my case, I can't mark it as private, but no one else can see it except me. It's okay for me as long as others don't see this game.
