SteamVR

SteamVR

Black display in VR, laptop, win 11, works but crashy
I'm using a laptop with Win 11 23H2, Reverb G2 with the Oasis SteamVR driver.

To use VR I need to:
-Reboot PC if opened SteamVR previously.
-Connect headset
-Open SteamVR ** black screen in VR **
-Close SteamVR ** takes >10secs, mouse cursor lockup for 5-10 sec **
-Open SteamVR. Works until SteamVR is closed.
-Close SteamVR.

If I open SteamVR again at this point without rebooting the PC, it takes 10-20 seconds, multiple mouse cursor lockups for 5-10 seconds. Lose mouse cursor in the secondary monitor. (Disconnecting the secondary monitor locks up the entire system, so does ctrl+shift+winkey+b driver reset) and may see a video related BSOD.)

Here, each time SteamVR successfully opens, there's a black screen in the VR headset, but tracking works and the frame rate is 10FPS like it's running on the iGPU.

All SteamVR related apps (with a unique file icon) are set to use the discreet GPU in Windows Settings->System->Display->Graphics. Not sure if it makes a difference.

Don't know if this is the Oasis SteamVR driver, or SteamVR choosing the iGPU. The headset is always plugged into the mini-DP of the discreet GPU.

EDIT: After changing all the SteamVR apps to manually run on the discreet GPU, the above only happens after using Unity without a restart. SteamVR can be opened/closed at any time and works fine.

Whats your GPU? Nvidia? AMD? CPU graphics?
GPU: Nvidia RTX 5000 (Turing).
iGPU: 10th gen intel.

For some reason it's fine now. Maybe needed a restart after setting all the SteamVR apps to the Nvidia GPU.

The "freshest" GPUs are still a problem.
The rule of thumb is to wait out for about 2-3 years after the GPU's release date, so:
- GPU driver developers smooth out performance and compatibility issues
- Other hardware developers fix their drivers for compatibility with that hardware
- Application developers fix their compatibility with that GPU, and add the features it has.

This is the toll you pay for using "the brand new". The fix possibly came from SteamVR update, or some Windows update.

Also, a full PC restart should be your #1 step when trying to fix ANY PC related issue.

The RTX 5000 (Turing) is a 2019 model. 2080 Super @ 80w. Drivers on the Quadros are slow to see updates though.

It's still happening, but narrowed it down.

It's after using Unity in the second display. Closing Unity. Opening SteamVR. Buggy/crashy.

After a restart it's fine.
